At Baselworld 2011, Certina has presented its new quartz-powered DS Multi-8 (ref. C020.419.16.057.00) model. Featuring trendy digital/analog time representation that is loved not only by millions of fans of Japanese brands but also by those who prefer more solid products like, say, Omega and Breitling, the Multi-8 GMT gives you an impressive list of functions, all wrapped in an elegant package of a dress watch.

The main point of interest of this product (or rather of its ETA E49.351 electronic movement) is its twin “time-swap” timezones function. Press a button and the hour hand will instantly jump from the main to a preset second time-zone: a useful feature if you happen to engage in frequent cross-border (or, rather, cross-time-zone) travel, yet think that any given watch that is supposed to be worn with anything more formal than a pair of blue jeans must be equipped with only one hour hand.
The rest of the functions come courtesy of the small digital display in the lower part of the dial. Like the other representatives of the analog/digital class of movements, the backlit LCD displays a full calendar, a timer and a full-scale chronograph with memory. Unlike super-quartz calibers used in Breitling timekeepers, backlighting on this model doesn’t seem to be night vision goggles-friendly, but this is not an “aviator” either, so I don’t deem this a usability problem.
The Multi-8, after all, is aimed at travelers and business persons, and those often suffer from jet-lag. They lie sleeplessly during the night-time hours and check their watches every fifteen minutes or so.
To make suffering from insomnia a trifle more comfortable, Certina equipped the DS Multi-8 GMT with a high-contrast, black dial with Superluminova substance generously covering the hands, the hour markers and the large, bold Arabic numerals.
If you somehow managed to fall asleep, the built-in alarm function (it can be set for vibration or sound) will wake you up in no time.
The new Certina DS Multi-8 will be presented in a medium-sized 42 mm stainless steel case and will feature not one, but three pushers with the push-piece in the middle replacing a standard setting crown.
According to Certina, the timepiece will be available soon at the price of some CHF 720, which is nice, especially after you factor in inevitable rebates and discounts when the timepiece will arrive in numerous online stores.
