Guardian Fall Protection

There is no maximum product lifetime for Guardian Fall Protection products, provided the products always pass
all pre-use and Competent Person inspection requirements as detailed in the product instruction manual.
Guardian requires all products to be inspected prior to each use by the end user, and at least every six months
Previously, Guardian soft good products (those made from webbing, rope, or other synthetic fiber materials)
had a product lifetime of five years from the date of first use, however this policy is no longer in place.
All fall protection equipment must always be used by trained personnel in accordance with the manufacturer’s
instructions provided with the equipment, with the exception of the stipulation stated above.

Subject: Product Life
The current DBI/SALA policy on the life of products is totally dependent on the condition of the item and not the age. A
DBI/SALA product can be used as long as the inspection performed does not reveal any damage, wear, or other
characteristics that will effect the product's performance.
The inspection of the product shall be performed according to details outlined in the user instruction manual on the
specific product as well as other applicable information provided by DBI/SALA. The frequency of inspections to determine
the usability of the product shall be as follows:
2. Monthly (by competent person other than user) (for winches, RPD s, Rescumatics, tripods, davit arms) (recorded).
3. Annually (by competent person other than the user) (recorded).
After a fall, the product shall be removed from service and destroyed (or used for educational purposes). After a fall, Self-

for inspection. The date of the products first use can also be used as an activation date.
The activation date is defined as the time when a product is first put into actual service (initially or after service/repair).
If inspection timing is based on the activation date instead of the manufacture date, service date or purchase date, the
activation date should be recorded in the user instruction manual in the inspection and maintenance log under the

Take care of your fall protection equipment people! When you take care of your Guardian products you are extending their product life and getting the most value from them. We receive a lot of questions about caring for Guardian personal fall protection equipment, questions like:
Can a Guardian Full Body Harness Be Washed?
- Hand washing with mild soap and water is perfectly acceptable. Do not throw it in a washing machine and do not dry clean!
The Buckles on My Harness Are Rusting a Little. Do I Need to Throw Them Away?
- If there are little rust spots on your hardware, ensure they still function properly, as deemed by your competent person. If the product passes inspection, you may definitely continue to use your Guardian harness. Inspection is key and make sure you document the inspection!
Can I Write On My Full Body Harness In Marker?
- Sharpie is the only brand of marker we suggest you use when writing on the webbing of your Guardian products.
Does My Guardian Self-Retracting Lifeline Need to Be Recertified?
- Any self-retracting lifeline that was made after October 2009 does not need annual recertification. However, you must follow normal ANSI, OSHA, and Guardian inspection rules. If your self-retracting lifeline is in need of repair, please contact us so that we can help you find your nearest product repair center.
What Is the Shelf Life for a Guardian Full Body Harness? What is the ANSI/OSHA Rule on This?
- ANSI and OSHA maintain that it is up to the manufacture to set the shelf life (“life expectancy”) for their products. For Guardian Fall Protection, There is no maximum product lifetime for Guardian Fall Protection products, provided the products always pass all pre-use and Competent Person inspection requirements as detailed in the product instruction manual. What Happens If I Fall In My Guardian Personal Fall Arrest System?
- You must remove those products from service as soon as possible and contact your competent person for inspection of these products. Guardian will replace your system components for free if you contact us and send back the product.*
Can I modify my Guardian Fall Protection Products?
- No! Any ‘field’ modification of our products voids any warranty and may cause serious injury or death during use. Simply contact us if you need a product customized for your particular line of work.
