A Whirlaway garbage disposal's compact design gives you additional room beneath the kitchen sink, but the device still provides the grinding power of its full-sized cousins. The disposal grinds food into small particles that can be washed down the drain without causing a clog in your home’s sewage lines. Attempting to grind potato peels, large amounts of food waste or foreign objects can cause those objects to jam between the lugs on the turntable and the grinding ring. Remove the jammed object from inside the unit before attempting to reset it.
Turn off the wall switch next to the sink that operates the garbage disposal. Look beneath the sink to determine how your disposal connects to the electrical circuit. Unplug the unit if it plugs into an electrical wall outlet. Turn off the kitchen electrical circuit inside the breaker panel that provides power to the disposal if it wires directly into the circuit and cannot be unplugged.
Hold a noncontact voltage tester next to the garbage disposal wall switch to ensure you turned off the correct breaker if your disposal is wired directly into the electrical circuit. The noncontact tester senses electrical current and warns you by flashing and beeping.
Pull the rubber splash guard from the top of the unit if applicable. Insert the end of a wooden broom or mop handle into the disposal. Use the handle to rotate the turntable in the bottom of the unit until you dislodge any objects caught between the turntable and the grinding ring.
Look inside the disposal with the help of a flashlight for the object. Use metal tongs to reach inside the garbage disposal, grab the object and remove it.
Find the red reset button on the side of the disposal near the bottom. Push the button back into the disposal until it clicks.
Replace the rubber splash guard on disposal. Plug the unit back into the wall or turn back on the circuit inside the breaker panel.
